SMU Certification Letter
SMU Registrar's Office issues certification letters on student programme enrolment status in hardcopy or softcopy form. Hardcopy letters may be signed by officers from the Registrar's Office or Student Services Hub (for Registrar).
For softcopy certification letters, please verify the document authenticity as follows:
- Open the certification letter in Adobe Acrobat (v6 and above) or Adobe Reader (v6 and above).
- Make sure a blue ribbon indicating that the certificate is issued by Netrust CA and certified by Singapore Management University appears.
Note: In Singapore, Netrust is the only provider of trusted digital IDs under the Adobe Approved Trust List (AATL) programme. View the current list of AATL members »
Please refer to the attachment accompanying the certification letter for more details.
Physical Certificate
The SMU degree certificate is printed on watermarked paper. The ceremonial seal of this University is gold, and is embossed at the bottom of the 290 x 220 mm page. The degree title is hot-stamped in gold and the official signatures of the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, President, Provost and Dean of School are in black. A serial number is printed on the reverse side of the degree certificate.
The SMU postgraduate diploma certificate is also printed on watermarked paper. The university logo appears at the top of the 290 x 220 mm page. The diploma title is hot-stamped in gold and the official signature of the Provost is in black. A serial number is printed on the reverse side of the postgraduate diploma certificate.
For joint degrees/diplomas, the logo of the partner institution and authorized signature will accordingly be printed in line with that of SMU's.
FOR ALL GRADUATED STUDENTS
Besides the physical version of the degree certificate(s) and official transcript, the certified digital version of the documents are also issued to graduates. The digital documents are built on a blockchain-based platform known as OpenCerts where each digital document will be assigned a unique cryptographic signature that is permanent and immutable. Any signs of tampering will show up when the document fails to match against the blockchain data, rendering the documents unauthentic. The OpenCerts Project is a national-level initiative that is announced by the Education Minister back in May 2019. Students who graduated prior to May 2019 have also been issued the OpenCerts.
The authenticity of the OpenCert can ONLY be verified by dragging and dropping the original OpenCert file at opencerts.io (Note: Best viewed using Google Chrome). The portal will then indicate if the uploaded document is authentic, and if it is originally issued by SMU. The certificate cannot be seen by simply opening the original OpenCert file directly.
Prospective employer/school may obtain the original Opencert file from alumnus for verification of the authenticity. The OpenCert file must be verified in its original form and format. PDF file is not to be considered authentic. Tampering of the file will invalidate the security on the digital document.
The certified digital documents would also be made available via Skills Passport @ MySkillsFuture portal or mobile app for free download. For more information regarding OpenCerts, please visit MySkillsFuture.gov.sg > FAQs and select FAQ category “Skills Passport / OpenCerts”.
