ACCOMMODATION AT YO:HA @ Pearl's Hill (Chinatown)
We are pleased to inform that SMU has renewed our lease of 09 apartments (32 beds) on part of Level 12 of the 12-storey tall building, known as yo:HA @ Pearl's Hill. Facilities includes basketball court and badminton court, whilst gym and BBQ pits are bookable but excluded from rent and separately charged, The hostel is a short 5-mins walk to the nearest Chinatown MRT and public bus-stops. The entire block comprises a total of 336 apartments over 12 floors and holding up students from other universities, schools and also adults who maybe studying or working at the nearby hospitals etc.
Location and Surrounding
yo:HA @ Pearl’s Hill is nestled on top of a hill and is accessible by foot. It offers tranqulity and is surrounded by lush greenery.
This is a historical building, which used to house the personnel of the police force stationed at the former Police Operational Headquarters and the CID Headquarters in the 1960s. After 2007, the Singapore Land Authority(SLA) made the block available for commercial rental,and the current operator has converted the 12-storey building into a commercial hostel. Due to the existing infrastructure, the 3 lifts do not serve up to Level 12 but stop at Level 10 and residents will need to walk up to Level 12. However, being on the top floor, you will be able to enjoy panaromic view of the city centre.
The accommodation at Pearl’s Hill Terrace is sited in the heart of the bustling and vibrant Chinatown. It is a stone's throw away from the popular food centre, People’s Park Complex Food Centre. Nearby amenities including shopping malls where daily necessities and sundries are available. As with many iconic Chinatowns around the world, you may wish to take note that being uniquely Singapore, do expect a relatively Asian Chinese environment which is buzzy and alive.
Transportation to school is convenient, as Chinatown MRT Station and the public bus-stops are within 5 minutes’ walk to the accommodation. The Chinatown MRT Station is just two stops away from Dhoby Ghuat MRT Station, the nearest MRT Station to the university and travelling by public bus is a short 4 stops' away from SMU. Chinatown district is a popular tourist destination and a must see for those who are keen on exploring and understanding more about the Chinese culture.

- Twin sharing in a one-bedroom apartment with provision of two single beds.
- Quadruple sharing in a two-bedroom apartment with provision of two single beds in each room.
* You may wish to note that the two-bedroom quad-sharing apartment mentioned in yo:HA hostel @ pearl's hill (external landlord) website means 4 persons to a bedroom (on double deck/bunk beds) making it a total of 8 persons per apartment. SMU's two-bedroom quad-sharing apartment operates differently – it is two persons sharing one bedroom (on 2 separate beds) making it a total of maximum 4 persons per apartment.

- Single beds with mattresses (Bedsheet, pillow, pillow case and blanket provided for each bed)*
- Free WIFI provided (speed could be slow during peak hours. Alternatively, you can opt to upgrade to WIFI Premium payable at ($32.40/month) with the site office.

HOW TO APPLY
We accept applications from undergraduates (full-time SMU students) and all other students (PhD or Masters) who have accepted the offer to study full time at SMU.
The allocation of rooms is at the discretion of the University and subject to the disposition and needs of applicants. Allocations will result in students of various age and cultural backgrounds being accommodated together in shared units, a reflection of SMU’s diverse student population.
Changing of rooms will not be allowed.

APPLICATION DEADLINE
The application for AY2023/24 would open on Tuesday , 31 October 2023 at 10am (Singapore time). You can keep a lookout on the website around the stated time. The application would close once all beds are taken up.
Applications will be processed on a first-come-first-serve basis and will close once all the beds are taken up, even before the deadline. Any applications received before the application start date and time would not be considered, so students are advised to adhere strictly to the timing.
If you apply before the start date stated above, your first application will be invalid and you will need to apply again. If you applied after the start date stated above, your application will only be considered if there are still vacant beds available.
APPLICATION RESULTS
Successful applicants will be informed of their application results and room allocations via email. Successful applicants are able to move in from :
Semester 1 - 1 August 2023
Semester 2 - 1 January 2024
Unsuccessful applicants will be placed on a waiting list and any allocations will be given based on any withdrawal or cancellation. However, being placed on the waiting list does not guarantee an offer of accommodation.
EARLY CHECK-IN
Early check-in is chargeable and is subject to room availability. A two-week advance notice is required for processing, you must email us to inform of your intention for early check-in. It is chargeable and subjected to room availability.
You will need to pay a one month advance accommodation fee to secure your early check-in booking, of which would be used to offset charges for your early check-in stay, bank charges and currency exchange rate differences. The balance if any, would then be refunded to you after you have check-out.
NOTE TO ALL APPLICANTS
- Submission of this application does not guarantee an offer of accommodation.
- The mode of payment is via Telegraphic/Bank Transfer only. A copy of the completed transaction slip or email notification from the bank for the payment made shall be returned to smuhostel@smu.edu.sg by the date stated in the Letter of Offer, in order for your bed to be reserved successfully.
- Confirmation: Successful applicants are required to pay the entire accommodation fees including utilities for the period of stay upfront when they receive the letter of offers for their stay. We would only be able to confirm your accommodation upon receipt of full payment.
- Administrative Fee: As the apartments are owned by EM Services Pte Ltd, successful applicants must make a separate payment of S$122.00 Administrative Fee to the site administration staff of EM Services Pte Ltd during check-in at yo:Ha Hostel @ Pearl's Hill.
- Pre-temination of stay: Successful applicant is expected to remain in residence for the time specified in the agreement once an allocation of the accommodation has been assigned to and accepted by him/her. No pre-termination of stay is allowed except for unforeseen circumstances such as withdrawal of course from SMU.
