Overseas Community Service Projects provide SMU students with the opportunity to make an impact in communities beyond their home ground.
The projects featured in the following are examples of community service engagements by SMU students.
Project Xin Yuan (PXY)
PXY started in 2008 and works with underprivileged students in China. In 2011, the project embarked on initiatives to engage disabled students from the Guangzhou English Training Centre for the Handicapped and Guangdong Peiying Vocational School.
Project Gazaab
Project Gazaab aims to alleviate poverty by helping youth in lower-income communities start their own micro-enterprises. Initiated in 2009 in Nepal, it equips students with business knowledge and inspires them to start-up sustainable micro-enterprises through business competitions conducted in high schools.
Project Reef Alert
Incepted in 2004, Project Reef Alert is focused on championing reef conservation efforts and promoting good diving practices to divers around the world. Each year, the project team undergoes 3 months of intensive training.
SMU Pendeza
Initiated in 2011, SMU Pendeza supports a girls' orphanage in Meru, Kenya by developing educational programmes and creating a social enterprise model.
Project Vikasa
Project Vikasa aims to help disadvantaged women gain financial independence. The 2015 pioneer team worked with two groups of women under the Gudri Women Empowerment Project of I-India, an NGO based in Jaipur, India, that looks into sustainable livelihood through fashion and crafts products and skills empowerment.
Project Bike4Change
Bike4Change was initiated in 2016 by SMUX Biking Team Sports & Adventure. The project aims to improve accessibility to essential amenities and educational institutions 'two wheels' at a time.
