SMU's Centre for Social Responsibility (C4SR) oversees the Community Service initiatives of SMU undergraduates. It guides and mentors students to undertake local and overseas service learning projects that are meaningful and sustainable. The Centre also provides insights into best practices in community engagement and social responsibility initiatives, in support of these learning goals:
- Develop qualities like purposefulness, empathy and humility in students
- Acquaint students with new skills, knowledge and interests
- Help students to form habits of contributing to the community
- Provide opportunities for students to develop creative solutions to address society's needs
- Acquaint students with volunteerism and career possibilities in the non-profit sector or in the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) field
Students may take part in community service activities by:
- checking the online portal, OnTRAC II for regular opportunities posted by our partner non-profit organisations
- referring to emails from C4SR on volunteer opportunities/projects
- joining projects organised by senior students
- looking for non-profit/community organisations, social service agencies or social enterprises surrounding the neighbourhood and check their websites for volunteering opportunities.
Students who are currently volunteering in their personal capacity, may discuss with C4SR on how this involvement can be recorded as part of their graduation requirement.
There are plenty of opportunities for students to work with beneficiaries and non-profit organisations in Singapore – be it the children from low-income families, elderly, the disabled, migrant workers, environment, etc. Students who are interested to start their own project or have fresh new ideas may email us at commsvcs@smu.edu.sg to make an appointment to explore further.
