The flexibility within the curriculum allowed me to take charge and tailor my own learning experiences in SMU. I became a more self-directed learner and followed my passion to select Strategic Management (1st Major) and Psychology (2nd Major). I was also able to utilise the knowledge I learnt from both majors during my internship.

The core curriculum courses in SMU are intellectually stimulating and classes were conducted in thought-provoking ways. The small class sizes allowed engaging discussions within courses such as Big Questions and Ethics & Social Responsibility. I gained new perspectives and could better understand the way individuals think. This helped me during the experiential-based learning projects as I was better prepared to be a critical thinker. Participating in projects from SMU-X and UOB-Asian Enterprise Institute, I gained exposure to real-life challenges to propose feasible solutions for our clients.

Through my student life experiences in local and overseas community services, I gained intercultural understanding and sensitivity and could better appreciate the different aspects of culture and heritage.

Over a total of 14-months period in 2 projects, I conducted a cultural exchange workshop while on an overseas community service project and worked to improve the overall wellbeing of beneficiaries in Singapore and Philippines with other SMU students. These experiences have shaped me to be who I am today as a leader, and I have learnt how to better communicate any ideas while being sensitive to the needs of others.

My time in SMU has taught me never to give up on my dreams! It was rather late into my Bachelor of Business Management degree journey that I realised that I wanted to pursue a career in technology. SMU’s flexible academic pathways meant that I was able to build interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary expertise by taking courses from both Lee Kong Chian School of Business and School of Computing and Information Systems, which ended up being crucial for me as I pivoted into the tech industry as a Data Analyst.

My project experience during the Entrepreneurship Practicum with the Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship gave me a shot at validating and market-testing potential business, and my time with an SMU-X project gave me the chance to work with non-profits, local SMEs, and MNCs to solve real business challenges. These opportunities allowed me to hone my critical thinking and problem solving skills, as the projects now had real impact and constraints!

The opportunities to work in teams were also abundant in co-curricular activities. I enjoyed student experiences as I was encouraged to step outside of my comfort zone to drive signature events such as SMU Sports Camp and SMU Wakiki when I served in SMU Sports Union management committee. Our collaboration as a team, complementing each other’s strength and weakness, while working towards a common goal allowed me to grow my leadership skills to the next level.

My community service experience in Project Vikasa, working with an overseas partner in Jaipur, India gave me perspective on the issues faced by communities outside of Singapore. This increased my understanding of the Asian context and sustainability issues, which led me to realise that I do have a duty as global citizens to give back to communities around the world.
