Local Community Service Projects inspire SMU students to enrich their worldview outside the classroom. Be Inspired, Push the Boundaries, and Continue Pushing to the Next Level of Engagement.
The following projects are examples of local community service engagements by SMU students. Freshmen are encouraged to join these programmes to get a sense of what community service entails at the start of their SMU journey.
starringSMU
Incepted in 2007, starringSMU is the largest and longest running community service project in SMU. It has helped over 10,000 people in the community over the past ten years.
Kidleidoscope
Initiated in 2013, Kidleidoscope aims to inspire disadvantaged children to pursue their dreams by instilling confidence in them through fun and interactive activities facilitated by our student volunteers.
INSPIRAR
Established in 2008, Inspirar is a student-led community service project that provides a platform for SMU students to actively engage and befriend the elderly. Various activities are organised to foster interaction between the youth and the elderly and at the same time, promote active ageing and a healthy lifestyle in today's greying society.
SMU Challenge
SMU Challenge is SMU’s signature charity event. The project comprises several donation drives and fundraising initiatives in support of beneficiaries, and culminates in a finale event like a charity walkathon. First conceived in 2008, the project raises awareness and funds for special needs individuals within the community. To date, it has raised close to $300,000 for various beneficiaries.
Western Circuit Sailing Regatta (WCSR)
Jointly organised by the SMU Sailing Club Sports & Adventure and Raffles Marina, the WCSR gives sailors with disabilities from Sailability Singapore the opportunity to experience a full-fledged local regatta.
Prinsep Street Residences (PSR) Community Service Projects
C4SR has also curated a number of local projects for students residing at PSR. Projects include sustainability and waste reduction initiatives, providing support for people with disabilities, tutoring and organising activities to engage children from lower income families, raising awareness and prevention of Dementia, as well as partnering disadvantaged homemakers to upgrade their home-based enterprises.
SMU-MCCY Charity Transparency Framework Collaboration
Since 2015, students from SMU's School of Accountancy have been collaborating with the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) to help assess more than 900 charities in areas such as transparency and corporate governance.
Community Homeworks
Community Homeworks is organised yearly by SMU's Habitat for Humanity chapter. The project aims to improve the safety and sanitation of the homes of the elderly and persons with disabilities.
