About SMU’s Institutional Review Board
The SMU Institutional Review Board (IRB) is an independent body, comprising scientific and non-scientific members. It is established to ensure the protection of the rights, safety, and welfare of human research participants through reviewing and approving research conducted by SMU personnel.
The goal of SMU IRB is to protect the rights, privacy and welfare of human participants who participate in research.
The SMU IRB is committed to adopting best practices on the protection of human participants involved in research.

SMU-IRB carefully reviews and monitors research to ensure that it is carried out legally and ethically. Research studies cannot start until the IRB has approved the research. SMU-IRB acts as an advocate for people who are participants.
Every Participant has the following rights:
- To be treated with respect, including respecting your decision whether or not to enroll, continue, or stop being in a study.
- To stop participating in a study at any time
- To be given adequate time to read the consent form and have the research study explained to you.
- To allow you to show the informed consent form to your spouse, relatives, friends or anyone you consider important prior to deciding whether or not to take part in a research study
- To be given time to ask questions at any time throughout the study, and to be told whom you can contact if you have any more questions.
- To be given a copy of the consent form after you have signed it.
- To enquire on the research procedure
- To be informed on the risk and benefit of the research
- To enquire on the handling of the research data
- To be informed of the potential harm if the participants is to leave the research midway.
- To know the approximate time to be taken for the research
- To enquire about compensation for participating in the research.
